LGBT Month and Marlene Dietrich

In the UK at the moment it's LGBT Month, which is a nationwide event to raise awareness of sexuality. Until only a few years ago, homosexuality was outlawed in schools, until Tony Blair and his comrades sneaked through an appeal of the notorious Section 28 of the Local Government Act. Now we actively celebrate sexuality in schools, which would have been useful when I was a confused teen.

Faye (my blog co-author), myself and our good friends Becky and Stefan went along to Marlene Dietrich - An Affectionate Tribute, which was part of this event. It was an absolutely astounding evening, to learn so much about someone who constantly challenged preconceptions and was willing to stand up for what she believed in; and she was bisexual. We all fell madly in love with her instantly!

Below is an excellent clip of her in Morocco (check out the lesbian kiss, in the 1930s, in America!)

The Edge of Heaven

I've always thought I'd have more chance of glimpsing a leprechaun mount a unicorn, than watch a thought provoking and intelligent lesbian movie.. until I watched this indie foreign film. Don't get me wrong, 'But I'm a Cheerleader' will always have a special place in my heart and D.E.B.S obviously isn't meant to be high brow. But this.. this is something else.

In Empire-esque fashion, I'll have stab at a brief synopsis - a Turkish professor of German tries to locate the daughter of a prostitute that his father has murdered. The daughter is a Turkish political revolutionary, illegally seeking asylum in Germany. Who happens to be a lesbian. Correction, HOT lesbian. The movie flits between the two countries, and follows the intricately entertwined lives of the deep & emotionally charged characters (who never quite learn of their inter-connectedness - obviously not on Facebook).

From the outset the film delicately explores the balance between sex & death, women in family & society, cultural differences and personal & political ideals and freedoms. And did I mention that the protagonist of the movie is a hot lesbian? Aces. Check it out.
